PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

American Academy in Rome -- One of the leading overseas centers for independent study and advanced research in the arts and humanities. Offers the Rome Prize fellowship program.

American Classical League (ACL) -- This organization fosters the study of classical languages in the U.S. and Canada. Offers many resources for teachers, a phenomenal job placement site for Latin teachers, an annual meeting in the summer, promotion, and much more.

American Philological Association (APA) -- A society for the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literatures, and civilizations. Excellent job placement for post-secondary teachers.

National Committee for Latin and Greek -- A good place to find promotional materials for your Latin or Greek program. Includes letters to prevent the closure of a program, a defense against the possible ignorance of guidance counselors, and more. The National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week is a joint venture of the American Classical League, CAMWS, and the APA to insure "...that our Latin, Greek, and Classics pre-college classrooms have the teachers they need. The Week is usually scheduled in March.

National Junior Classical League (NJCL) -- An organization for high-school Latin students.

Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies -- An organization in the U.K. for those interested in the study of Rome and the Roman Empire. The Society produces the Journal of Roman Studies.

Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) -- Our regional classics organization covering 31 midwestern, western, and southern states, plus 3 Canadian provinces.

South Carolina Foreign Language Teachers Association (SCFLTA) -- The state organization for teachers and professors of all languages.

COLLEGES WITH CLASSICS PROGRAMS

A list of certification programs in the United States can be found at the National Latin Teacher Recruitment website. Below are programs offered in South Carolina, the Southeast region, or via distance education. Potential teachers of Latin who do not have a degree in education and wish to consider alternative certification via the SC State Dept. of Education should view the Teacher Resources page.

SOUTH CAROLINA

College of Charleston -- Has a Master of Education degree in Latin. The school offers two undergraduate degrees in the department of Classics: the A.B. degree for those with an interest in Greek and Latin language, and the B.A. degree for students with a primary interest in Greek and Roman culture and civilization.

Furman University -- offers a B.A. degree with a concentration in Latin.

University of South Carolina -- The master's program in Latin is due to reopen soon. The Comparative Literature department offers a Ph.D. program with a concentration in Latin. For more information, visit the department webpage.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Postdoctoral scholars and professionals in relevant fields are eligible to apply for fellowships of five to ten months, corresponding to the American School's academic year, September to June. Stipends range from $20,000 to $40,000. Deadline: November 15.

Arthur Patch McKinlay Scholarship (ACL). Up to $1500 is awarded to the recipient, who must be a member of ACL for the last three years and a current Classics teacher. Funding can be used for a variety of activities, including research or first-time attendance at the American Classical League Institute. Deadline: January.

Ed Phinney Commemorative Scholarship (ACL). A maximum of $750 for various activities, including attendance at the ACL Institute, travel, tuition, or purchase of ACL materials. Open to current members of ACL. Deadline: January.

Glenn Knudsvig Memorial Scholarship (ACL). Open to JCL sponsors or Classics teachers with less than 5 years' experience, and graduate students. There are several specific restrictions; see the website to view them all. Maximum award: $750. Deadline: January.

Janice and Herbert Benario Award (CAMWS). A $1500 fellowship that the recipient may apply to the summer travel program of his or her choice. Open to elementary or secondary level teachers of Classics or graduate students in Classics who are current CAMWS members. Deadline: January.

Manson A. Stewart Award (CAMWS). Awards for primary, middle, and secondary level teachers who are members of CAMWS. The Teacher Training Award provides financial assistance to those working toward certification to teach Latin. Deadline: February. Travel Awards assist Latin teachers who wish to attend the CAMWS or Southern Section meeting. Deadline: October. A $1000 scholarship awarded to a limited number of undergraduate students majoring in Classics at the sophomore or junior level at a CAMWS institution. Deadline: February.

Mary A. Grant Award (CAMWS). A $2500 fellowship to attend the summer session of the American Academy in Rome. Open to elementary or secondary level teachers of Classics or graduate students in Classics who are current CAMWS members. Deadline: January.

Maureen O'Donnell/Eunice E. Kraft Teacher Training Scholarships (ACL). A $750 scholarship for teacher training courses or expenses connected with certification in Latin. Deadlines: December and March.

Rome Prize (American Academy in Rome). Fellowships of $10,500 and $21,000 awarded each year to 15 scholars working in Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern studies. Preference will be given for those who need research time in Italy and especially Rome. Deadline: November.

Semple Award (CAMWS). A $2500 fellowship to attend the summer session of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Open to elementary or secondary level teachers of Classics or graduate students in Classics who are current CAMWS members. Deadline: January.

Presidential Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper (CAMWS). A $200 prize awarded to the best paper delivered by a graduate student at the annual CAMWS meeting. Deadline: February.

Archaeology, Anthropology, and History Scholarships is a site maintained by Rod Polasky, who struggles to keep it current. He also offers advice on obtaining scholarships. Students researching possible scholarships in Classics should use a search engine (e.g., Google) and search using a specific school name (e.g., Amherst) and "scholarship" and "Classics" vel sim. Many schools offer scholarships to students who plan to major in Classics and Classics-related fields.

GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL STUDENT GOES TO CAMBRIDGE
Shelby Switzer, a graduate of the Governor's School for Arts and Humanities 2009, will be heading to Cambridge University to study in the department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic. Ms. Switzer, a creative writer and an ardent linguist, has studied Latin up to level 5 Advanced-placement (and continues to read Latin), Greek, French, and German in her high-school career.
